Obituary of James Edward Worsham

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

While the dew was still on the flowers on Sunday, February 9, 2025, God dispatched His angel and whispered to James Edward Worsham, “Come home. Your work on earth is complete”.

James was born to the late Matthew Lee, Jr. and Bessie Louise Friend Worsham on October 4, 1944, in Amelia, Virginia. He was baptized and joined Manassa Hill Baptist Church at a very young age and served faithfully in Sunday School, Junior Choir, and Usher’s Ministry until he relocated to New York. He continued to support his church financially and always attended homecomings and revivals. He graduated from Russell Grove High School in 1963 and was an outstanding athlete, playing baseball, basketball, and football.

James loved his family and especially enjoyed hosting the annual family Thanksgiving feast. He loved playing Pokeno, dominos, tic-tac-toe, and Black History games, rewarding his nieces and nephews with cash prizes. In later years, James enjoyed baseball, bowling, and the Washington Commanders, often commentating on the game with his brothers and nephews. After he retired, he had a passion for humor, sharing Joel Osteen jokes with everyone.

James was a spiritual librarian and shared his knowledge of scriptures by sending books to friends and family. He challenged and encouraged others to participate in bible trivia games.

James earned an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1968 after serving his country in Seoul, Korea. For forty-plus years, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 2013.

James was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Garner Worsham, sister Dianne Royal, brother Benjamin Worsham, and mother-in-law Isabell Holmes, whom he admired.

James leaves to cherish precious and fond memories to his loving wife of fifty-six years, Delores; daughter whom he adored, Crystal Denise Worsham Wade (Eric); grandson who was the center of his joy, Tyler Collin Worsham Wade; five sisters, Margaret Bates, Alma Walton, Bessie Johnson (Dr. Ronald), Berthell Porter (Frank), Rachel Smith (Michael); four brothers, Early, Howard, Melvin, Jerry (Joy) Worsham; aunt, Louise Worsham; sister-in-law, Hattie Beamon; brother-in-law, Minister Larry Gadson (Linda); god-sons, Stacey and Derrick Osborne; god-brother, Minister Charles White (Sabrina); a host of loving and devoted nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and many, many friends including special friends Michael Dyer, Keith Scarborough, Eric Young, Grover Everett, and the members of the Homefield Senior Bowling League.
