Florine G. Yates Shelton Obituary

Florine G. Yates Shelton, 80 of Blackstone, Virginia entered eternal rest on Thursday, December 18, 2025, when God dispatched His angels to retrieve her from her earthly home to come to her eternal home in heaven on high.  Florine was born on October 24, 1945. She was the daughter of the late James Edward and Elizabeth Farley Yates.

Florine was educated in the Nottoway County Public School System.  She attended A.G. Richardson Elementary School and graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in 1964.  Upon graduation she attended Miss Rose’s Beauty School in Richmond, Virginia, Richmond Professional Institute of Nursing, and Southside Community College in Alberta, Virginia.

She was employed in the health care field until retirement. Flo worked at MCV Hospital, Piedmont Geriatric Hospital, Henrico Doctors Hospital, Hickory Hill Retirement Community, and Heritage Hall Rehabilitation Center.  While working at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital she met and married the love of her life, Edward Alexander Shelton who preceded her in death.

Flo was a person who always liked to be in the “KNOW”. She was a member of the Cedar Hill Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board, the Willing Workers Ministry, the Pastor’s Aide, the Gospel Choir, and the Cemetery Committee.

In the community Flo was known to most people as Aunt Pie. Aunt Pie was a volunteer with the Nottoway Youth Football Association and the Nottoway High School 21st Century Afterschool and Summer programs. As a volunteer she loved working with the children cooking, baking, cake decorating, and crocheting.

She leaves cherished, loving and precious memories to her son, E. Jalen Yates; two brothers, Clyde Yates (Lauretta) of Cumberland, Virginia, and Joseph Yates (Cynthia) of Henderson, North Carolina; goddaughters, Tarshay-Celeise Adegeye of Chester, Virginia, and Tomeka Satchell-Coleman of Durham, North Carolina; godson, Miguel Satchell of Lawrenceville, Virginia; a host of nieces and nephews that she considered to be her children; special friends, Jeanette Pouncey of Chester, Virginia, Priscilla Poles of Richmond, Virginia, Thomas Jones of Blackstone, Virginia, Shirley Lucas of Jonesboro, Georgia, Elaine Satchell of Richmond, Virginia, Lois Carter of Burkeville, Virginia, and her caregiver, Jennifer Pellitier of Amelia, Virginia; along with three cousins that she thought of as her brothers, William (Wendell) Clay, Floyd Clay, and Otis Worsham.

Flo as she was affectionately called, was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elizabeth Yates; four brothers, James, Thomas, Herbert and Howard (Ben); three sisters, Rosa, DeLois, and LoVerna.

If Flo was writing this, she would say I Love You as she did when ending her conversations!!!
