Obituary of Harlan Clarkson Hayes

Please share a memory of Harlan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Harlan “Hank” Clarkson Hayes, 86, of Amelia, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, November 30, 2024. Hank is preceded in death by his parents, Amon Hipes Hayes and Della Brizendine Hayes, both of Essex County, Virginia, as well as his brother, Amon Mason Hayes, of Oak Harbor, Ohio. Hank is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Jean Johnson Hayes, sisters Gabriella Rakes and Susie Emma King, both of Essex County, and three sons: Mark, Brian (wife Wanda), and Alec (wife Cynthia). Hank was blessed with eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Hank retired in 1992 from Dupont Fibers in Richmond, VA after 30 years of service. He lived his life close to the earth with soil under his nails and a grateful heart for God’s beautiful creation. A devoted gardener, beekeeper, and fixer of anything mechanical, he found joy in canning the fruits of his labor, harvesting honey, and working with his tractor, tending to every corner of his land with care. His days were shared with his faithful dog, Jeda, and spent between the well-worn pages of his Bible.

Above all, his greatest love was for the One who first loved him, and his deepest desire was to live a life worthy of the Gospel of Christ.
