Gwendolyn Johnson, affectionally known as “Gwen” was a shining star to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She departed her life peacefully in her sleep on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Gwen was born on December 1, 1955, in Rosehill, North Carolina, to the late James Jerome Hatcher and Mary Louise Hatcher. She later relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where she received her education in the Bedford-Stuyvesant community. At Fort Green Church, Gwen found a source of comfort and strength that contributed to her spiritual growth.
She married Alworth Johnson, whom she referred to as “Wert,” and they settled in Jetersville, Virginia where he later passed away. For 25 years she dedicated her career to environmental services at Amelia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Her warm-heartedness and kindness touched the hearts of many. She will be remembered for her infectious spirit, unwavering support to her loved ones and her ability to bring joy to every situation. Her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire to all who knew her.
Gwen is lovingly remembered and survived by her cherished children: Tasha Smalls, Tonya Hatcher-Toussaint (Charles), Shelia Johnson, Valerie Nash (Kevin, Jr.), Lionel Jerome Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Jermaine Johnson, one surviving sister Sandra Hatcher; two surviving brothers Kevin and Jeffrey Hatcher; and a dear aunt Deloris Jones, along with her special jewels,grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
