Obituary of Laverne Claudette Carroway

Please share a memory of Laverne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mrs. Laverne Claudette Carroway, daughter of the late Moses Harding and Elizabeth Clements Mitchell, the youngest of four children, was born on November 8, 1957 in  Amelia, Virginia.  On Friday, May 7, 2021, God in His infinite wisdom called her from labor to reward.

Laverne known as Claudette, along with her sister and two brothers was reared by her parents and paternal grandparents, the late Deacon Willie Herman and Deaconess Roena Taylor Mitchell.  She was also fondly cared for by her maternal grandparents, the late Emily and Benjamin Clements.

Claudette was baptized at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at an early age.  While serving faithfully, she attended Sunday School, regular Church services, sung in the choir and attended revivals.

Claudette was educated in the Amelia County Public School.  After meeting and marrying the love of her life, the late Mr. Stanley Carroway, she then relocated to Richmond, Virginia.  Her work career consisted of employment in Food Service and Health Care for Seniors.

While never giving up membership at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, she and her husband enjoyed attending various church services in Richmond.  Boldly she would always say “I’m A Child Of The King”.

Claudette enjoyed shopping for the latest fashions, eating in nice restaurants, preparing holiday meals, participating in family reunions, and conversating with family about old times.  Visiting her Aunt Cora in Baltimore, MD, brought her much joy.  She was a resourceful, caring person but could be outspoken if necessary.  Throughout her trials and tribulations, she kept her faith in the Lord.

Claudette was preceded in death by her oldest brother, Douglas Jerome Mitchell.

She leaves to cherish her memories, sister, Delbrah Mitchell, Amelia, VA; brother, Moses L. Mitchell, Amelia, VA; nieces, Cora Mitchell, Powhatan, VA, Millie O’Neal, Washington, DC; one great niece, Sarai Staples, Amelia, VA; four aunts, Cora Hicks, Amelia, VA, Queen Reed, Catherine Chestnut, Matilda Clements, all of Richmond, VA; two uncles, Alaska Clements, Ashland, VA and Charlie Clements, Alexandria, VA; host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
